It’s easy to change out a boring Rotozip bit, but it needs of being done carefuly. It has a tiny spindle and even smaller retention nut. Be carefull not to mar the shaft, or worse yet strip thread.
How To Change A Rotozip Bit Safely
Safety and Setup Preparation
Being able to change out bits fast allow you to get on with what you are doing as well as protect your tool. Turn it off first. No matter how safe that trigger lock feels, don’t take chances with electricity if your hands is covered in dust.
Set the Rotozip down on solid surface. A soft cloth beneath the body will help avoid scratches and provide more better stability. When applying leverage to cut out something, you want a solid surface so it doesn’t spin around underneath you.
Removing the Old Bit
Then stabilize the spindle. If you tightens the nut with just one wrench, the shaft or collet will turn. On most model of Rotozips there is an Allen wrench provided for loosening the nut.
However, you require another wrench for tightening (or loosening) the spindle. A hex key, typically 5mm or 6 mm, are used to retain the shaft, according to user’s manual. Find the flat spot in the spindle and insert your wrench here.
Grip firmly and it will keep internal mechanism from winding up and wrecking the bearings. Use one Allen wrench to hold the spindle steady while you use another to turn the retention nut counter-clockwise to loosen it. It may be initialy tight.
If you is unable to turn it, don’t apply too much torque if it does not budge. Gently tap on the wrench handle with a hammer to release any static friction. Older versions of these may have a left hand thread.
Check your manual. Most moddern Rotozip bits will have a standard right hand thread. Turn the nut loose enough to remove it, then slide it down the shaft.
Cleaning the Collet
Before pulling off the old bit, check collet. The collet (the sleeve that clamps onto the shank of the cutting bit) get packed with sawdust and other crap over time. That grit will act as a type of sandpaper on your new bit.
Clean out insides with a little brush or a can of compressed air. A clean collet mean a true grip. If there is no wobble in the bit at high speed, there is no premature wear.
This ensures safe and proper operation. Ten seconds to remove the crap. Take off the old dull part; install the new.
Installing and Securing the New Bit
Seat the shank all the way into place. It will be flush with bottom of the collet. There is no gap.
Then screw on the retention nut by hand. Start it right so you don’t cross-thread. When finger tight go at it again with the Allen wrench.
Hold the spindle wrench as well. You want firm, but you don’t want to crush anything. Too much tightening will strip threads or distort collet.
Gently pull on the bit to test its snugness. It shouldn’t budge. If it does feel loose, tighten the bit another 1/4 turn.
Final Testing and Safety Check
Once you’re satisfied, plug the tool in and run it briefly in a safe direction. Pay attention for vibration. If it spin freely, you’re good to go.
If there’s any rattling or it feels unbalanced, stop now. Check that your bit is seated properly and that collet is clean. This swap help you save time and aggravation.
What could of been a project stopper becomes a brief pause. Always have some extra on hand and you’ll never stall out. You’ll get cleaner cuts.
Your materials will go farther then before. A sharper bit is the best part because precision is naturaly in the details.
