Why A Planer Isn’t Pulling Wood Through

Wood ejects: Planers are frustrating because instead of cutting wood properly, they spit it back out. They push it back out, groaning on machine and making you think something must be wrong with the equipment. That means you’re no good at using it; that’s what it feels like.

In most cases, it’s not so dramatic. Most planers does work. And they’re just stubbornly refusing to cut against its own limitations.

The machine doesn’t hate you. It’s just the mechanics and physics fighting you. Knowing this turns a fight into an adjustment checklist.

The first thing to look at is the feed rate, which is how fast rollers push wood through the blades. The wood will buck and eject if forced to quickly. A common mistake for a beginner is to believe that pressure = more cut.

This is not true. Pressure = stripped teeth and jammed gears. Allow machine to pull the wood for you.

You’re there to guide the board but not shove it. Also inspect knives on your cutter head. A dull blade won’t slice through wood but rather crushes wood fiber.

Anything over that and you’re using the planer as a grinding wheel. Heat will accumulate, the motor will scream and wood won’t budge. Take smaller bites.

It is slower, yes. It works every time, though. Feed rollers are equally important to the blades.

Cleaning Feed Rollers

They gets slick with time. They lose their ability to grab on the wood. Clean them off of any sap and pitch.

Sometimes that brings back some grip. Use a bit of mineral spirits if needed or a special roller cleaner to clean them. Otherwise you’re looking at bald rollers which mean new rollers.

It is a real cheap fix and one that will save lots of headache. Be sure to inspect your bed as well. Debris, such as sawdust and shavings, will collect underneath the infeed roller and act as lubricant.

Maintaining a Clean Bed

The board will then “float” instead of feeding into the cutter head. This issue can be more common on resinous species (such as cedar and pine) or when you are working with wet wood. Maintain a clean bed.

Just a quick brush pass before each board make a big difference in whether material feeds into machine smoothly. Last but not least, what’s your wood like? Wood is full of moisture when it’s freshly milled.

First flatten one face on a jointer. Then plane the other side. That way the wood moves and the machine has a good reference point to work with.

And if the wood doesn’t move, then the answer isn’t really a mystery. Either the blades aren’t biting or gripping well enough, or they are putting too much strain on motor. Sharpen your blades.

Change your depth. Let the rollers do their job. Stop fighting your planer, because your planer wants to help.
