There’s something you fear that goes “thud” instead of “slice.” You pull up to make the cut, get lined up, press the trigger…and nothing works. The saw binds or kicks back. Or it just won’t go through cleanly.
You adjust the fence, examine the blade. Everything appears correct. It doesn’t feel right.

Understanding Electronic Lockouts
A physical switch is the most prevalent type of lockout mechanism. It is typically found on top or side of the motor housing. This switch most commonly has two position.
They are normally labeled as ON/OFF or use symbols like an unlock key and a padlock icon to represent locked. When the switch is locked you should be able to feel that it is stuck, even though the trigger seems loose. There may also be a click from within the trigger mechanism but still no power to the motor.
Checking the Physical Switch
First check the position. Gently give the switch a firm toggle back and forth. Does it resist?
Is it gritty? Don’t force anything! A plastic switch can have its internal tab snapped off by forcing it, which is now a much larger repair issue then just a stuck lock.
Diagnosing Power Delivery Issues
When the saw refuses to start and the switch is in the right place, consider the power source. Voltage drop is an issue for Hitachi saws. If extension cord is too long, not enough power may reach the tool.
Also, consider using too light of a gauge on the cord. This can look like a lockout because the trigger engages yet motor fails to fire. Move nearer the outlet or upgrade to a more heavy duty cord.

Battery and Interlock Troubleshooting

A battery that has been sitting in cold weather or just plain getting old may not put out peak voltage. Use another battery if available. If the new battery makes the saw operational, then the original battery is the culprit and not the saw itself.

But the housing has to be opened in order to replace the trigger assembly. If you’re not comfortable taking apart power tools that’s risky business and will void warranties. For most people, your best bet is to take the saw into a certified repair center.
They’ll replace the switch with an OEM part and re-calibrate their safety features. It won’t be free but at least you know the tool is going to stay safe for everyday use. Taping over or wiring around the safety lock is not a shortcut, it’s a recipe for injury.
So be patient, but also be methodical in your checking and getting that Hitachi saw back to operating as good as new. Start with the easy stuff, like the power source and switches, then work your way up to the internals and clean them only if needed. A safe saw is a well maintained saw and a well maintained saw gives you back what you bought it for in the first place, those smooth, authoritative cuts.
