That’s a common complaint about using a bandsaw. It wander around cutting the line. You clamp the board down and set your fence in place; then you make the cut, and the blade wanders.
Now you’ve got an uneven edge of a board. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned woodworker, it happens. But seasoned woodworkers knows what to check first.
Everyone think it’s the blade. They change it out, but still have the issue. That’s because a bandsaw is a system.
It depends on tension, tracking, guide bearings, and feed pressure. A single component that are off will make everything else fail. You can’t guess your way to making good straight cuts.

Essential Checks For Straight Bandsaw Cuts
Blade Tension Adjustment
First, blade tension is by far the biggest cause when cuts is bad. When a blade is too loose it will flex back and forth as you cut, pulling off the line.
The blade need to be as taut as a guitar string. The column on most band saws have a tension gauge. Engage it.
Your saw may not have one, in which case push on the blade with your finger from side to side. There’s no need for it to move more than a quarter inch. Too much tension will ruin wheel tires, but anything less ensures a crooked cut.
Tracking and Tire Alignment
Finally, check the tracking. Have you ever seen a wheelbarrow walk? It’ll go one way and then come back around.
You can open the side guard and see if the blade is riding on the crowned center of the tire surface. That’s what controls tracking. To adjust, turn the tracking knob very slowly with your machine running.
Your goal is to have the blade sitting right down in the center of the tire. That means equal wear. Now you know that if your tracking are bad, tightening the tension won’t correct it.

Too tight and it wanders and burns the blade. Too loose and there is no bearing to speak of. Minimal contact are the rule.
The blade should just barely touch side bearings. Just put your finger behind the blade and if you get hot, then the bearings is too tight. Back them off till the blade turn freely with no wobble.
Thrust Bearing Position
Just as important is the position of the thrust bearing on which the back of the blade rides into the cut. It should be located approximately a thirty-second inch behind the blade. Too far behind and the blade will flex forward onto the cut causing it to burn.
Too close and there’s the possibility of interference with the cutting action. Locate the bearing close enough to support the blade without being so close that it comes in contact with the blade or wood. This adjustment stabilize the rear of the blade.
Blade Selection and Feed Pressure
And finally, think about the blade type and how much feed pressure you apply. Too much feed pressure deflects the blade. This is especially true for thin kerf blades.
So if you’re resawing hardwood on a fine tooth resaw blade, that’s going to affect the cut. Match the blade to the job. For ripping use a hook-tooth blade.
For crosscutting try a skip-tooth. Feed the wood at a steady pace. Let the blade do the work.
Don’t force it. The cuts will straighten out when you slow down. It takes time.
It takes focus. And you will need patience to learn how to use the bandsaw. After all, once the guides are set up, the tracking is adjusted, and the tension is dialed in, the saw behaves better.
