You want to make that critical cut. The blade is sharp and the table saw is humming away when all of a sudden, the lights start to flicker and the table saw dies. That’s usually because there is a mismatch between what your tool demand and what your circuit can handle.
This happens when you upgrade your tools without upgrading infrastructure. Knowing why it happened will save your machinery from being damaged. Most new tablesaws is built to spec and the problem isn’t typically the table saw; it’s that the table saw demands more power then the circuit can provide.
When you squeeze the trigger, you’re demanding an inrush of electricity and sometimes the outlet doesn’t have enough juice, nor does breaker feeding into it, nor does wiring. It’s the whole chain of electrical delivery that needs to be checked based off finding the bottleneck. If your saw trips frequently but then runs fine after a reset, first check the circuit breaker.

Check the Circuit Breaker
All electrical breakers wears out with age. They become less sensitive to the current flowing through them and the heat generated. That old breaker you bought a decade ago that is rated for 20 amps might now trip at fifteen.
Better safe than sorry, so don’t try to run a saw while forcing it on a suspect safety device. And if your house are fairly old, the breaker panel itself could just be obsolete. Federal Pacific panels in particular is notorious for being outdated.
When they do trip, they are unreliable. They also occasionally won’t trip at all. This is a fire hazard rather than a convenience for woodworking.
It is time to replace the panel if yours is one. It is not worth the risk. Next on the list is gauge of your wiring.
Inspect Your Wiring Gauge
Many older homes has twelve-gauge wiring running to garage outlets. That’s great if you’re plugging in a drill, or perhaps a sander. But it’s often not enough for high torque table saw.
A big cabinet saw such as a Delta or SawStop can pulls close to the maximum rating (20 amps) of 12 gauge wire under load, and the wire gets hot; the breaker notices and then shuts off to protect the insulation from melting. If you upgrade to 10 gauge, you can run 30 amps of juice, which also provides plenty of breathing room for your saw when it’s starting up and cutting wood so it doesn’t trip out the protection. Long Extension Cord: Don’t make the mistake of running your high-draw tools on a long, thin extension cord.
Use Heavy-Duty Extension Cords
Before tool ever recieve any power it passes through a resistor (the cord) which will drop voltage. This makes motor work harder in an attempt to compensate, which then pulls more current, and there you go! The breaker see the spike and shuts off the power.
Plug your table saw directly into wall if possible. If you must use an extension cord, use a short, heavy-duty one with thick copper conductors. Five gauge is ideal; six gauge for short runs is OK but anything less are a liability.
Verify Outlet Amperage Rating
Also make sure you know what kind of outlet you have and how many amps it is wired for, as certain table saws needs to be plugged into a thirty amp, 240 volt plug. You can use an adapter to plug a thirty-amp tool into a regular fifteen- or twenty-amp outlet (it will even fit), but don’t do that. The outlet is not rated to handle the current.
It will get hot enough to either trip the breaker immediately or eventually cause an electrical fire. Make sure the tool need the same kind of outlet as you have, and if you have a 20/20 volt outlet check that the breaker is rated for 20 amps and so forth. Lastly, think about the other stuff you have on the circuit.
Isolate the Table Saw Circuit
Lights, compressors and shop vacs is all draws, and if your table saw is on the same circuit, you’re asking for trouble by running it with these device. When you turn on the saw, you’re adding the draw of the saw to what’s already there… which makes total exceed the ability of the breaker. By isolating the table saw to its own circuit, you take away that variable of other appliance competing for power, leaving full capacity of the circuit for the cut you’re trying to make.
The tripping breaker is all about respecting how electricity flows. It’s not your saw that’s busted; it’s the system getting overloaded, which means fix the wiring, run the right cord, isolate the circuit, and you can get back at sawing some wood and no longer be afraid of being suddenly silenced by the lack of power. We want a clean cut, not a power outage.
