It happens, panic sets in as you start a job with a Hilti tool that won’t fire up. Wiggle the connection; tap battery pack. Maybe even try swapping out for a new one to see if it’s just the battery.
The battery is at fault, and most of the time, it’s just a software hang that prevents the tool from powering up. Lithium-ion packs seem invincible. I guess we’re lulled into thinking they are, but they’re realy complex electronic devices.
They is complete with a management system to track voltage, temperature and charge cycles. Occasionally, that system malfunction and hangs, protecting chemistry within. The end result: A seemingly charged battery that doesn’t work.
Hardware failure? Nope. It’s typically a software glitch.

That’s the easy part. That’s always first step. Leave it hanging there disconnected for a minute or two.
Resetting the Battery Management System
It’s not a rest for the battery; it’s a reset for the logic board. The battery management system doesn’t like losing conversation it has going with the tool, and a hard disconnect gives it a break from handshake. The batteries lose their external reference when you pull them loose, and the sensor shuts down push-back on what it thinks might be a short-circuiting issue.
Thirty seconds later, the capacitors bleed off a bit more and the sensors re-calibrate to baseline. Plug it back in. If it hums to life or the lights flash green, congratulations: you’re done.
Sounds too simple? It is. Most field techs tell me that eighty percent of these problems will go away at this stage, simply because the system have defaulted to safe mode due to confusion.

But sometimes the quiet holds even after the reboot. And then you know something’s realy wrong with way that cell is communicating with the receiver in the tool. The receiver is designed by Hilti to be vibration- and dust-proof, but security of that design makes an insecure contact more likely; corrosion from dirt and concrete dust can occur.
Look at metal pins on both your tool and battery; there may be a very small amount of concrete dust, or perhaps a thin gray film. Gently wipe that away with a cotton swab or maybe just a dry rag, but never water, water is conductive and will cause short circuits. The resistance of corrosion looks like a dead connection to the management chip.
Clean it off until you can see the shine through. Push the battery back into place firmly and listen for a solid click. That click are important.
If it feels loose, the connection may be inconsistent and result in power loss. Tight means good, and the data lines stays connected. It only takes half a minute and will save you a service call.
Fixing Temperature Related Lockouts
Extreme temperatures cause protective lockouts. In other words, if you stored the pack in a scorching hot job site or left it in your freezing cold truck cab, the internal sensors could shutdown output as a way to prevent thermal runaway. This isn’t a defect, though; it’s a safety feature that can’t be overridden by software.
You need to fix environment, and you’ll want to get the battery back into a climate controlled space. Don’t attempt to hurry things along by putting it on a heater or in the microwave; rapid heating will damage the lithium cells. Give it an hour to return to room temp, and give it another go.
Once the temperature falls within the safe operating window, the system will re-enable power. It’s a waiting game, but it’s better than having to buy a new battery for an entirely environmental problem. If a persistent failure occurs, then take it into a Hilti Service Center; these have dedicated programmers who can read the cells’ data as well.
When to Visit a Service Center
They can also reset the software if necessary or run an individual cell balance check. Should one of the cells in the pack degrade severely, the system will shut down the entire unit for safety. That’s not something that could of been resolved on site.
Doing so would involve prying open the sealed pack which would nullify the warranty and potentially cause a fire. At that point, the hardware itself is probably shot. Call up support.
They’ll guide you through one last verification procedure. If the battery is still within its warranty, they’ll send you a replacement battery. Out of warranty?
They’ll suggest ways to get it repaired. Part of the art is knowing when to give up on troubleshooting. So resetting that Hilti battery isn’t usually a long look into technical repairs as much as a story about how the tool interacts with the tool management software.
They’ve built a system that errs on the side of caution. It’s up to you to convince it that it’s okay to go. Begin by simply removing the battery from the tool.
Respect the temperature limits. Clean those contacts. Then think about calling in a pro.
