Hilti GX3 Not Firing? Here’s Why

A Hilti GX3 rotary hammer that won’t fire drives a particular kind of frustration for tool users. The tool is dead. It don’t deliver any power; it just clicks.

You are in a rush, in a loud environment, and this tool just failed you. It’s personal, right? Most of the time it wasn’t.

The tool isn’t broken; the tool’s simply confused. Knowing why SDS high-end tools won’t fire will save you a call to support because cause can often be as simple as switch. This is a fine piece of equipement made for performance and safety.

It’s a hammer that don’t act like a cheaper contractor grade hammer. Expectations include sensors and following their cues on how to use this device. If it fail to fire it’s usually letting you know there was an error in mode selection, alignment or energy.

Look at the system to solve it, not just motor. It is a battery. Of course this one’s easy, but it’s not typically from a flat out depleted battery.

Check Your Battery Capacity

In fact, more often then not, it’s a result of a battery with too little capacity, either because of its age or just plain being too small for the job. Using a standard 5 amp-hour pack when performing a large concrete application will cause tool to enter its own protection mode to protect the battery. While this prolongs the battery’s life, it also shuts down your project.

It requires a high output cell to keeps up with power needed to fire it. These are typically referred to as 12 amp-hours and above. If charge is low, it may act like a faulty trigger and should of been checked using the battery health indicator.

Verify the Mode Selector

Third, note the operating mode selector. A common mistake I see people make when they change from hammer mode to drilling mode is forgetting this part of tool. On the GX3, there are separate settings for hammer only, rotation only and combined hammer drill.

When you put it on rotation only, the trigger turns the chuck but doesn’t activate the hammer mechanism. You’ll feel as if something didn’t fire but won’t get any percussive action. Make sure you have ring around the chuck lined up with appropriate icon for what you need to do.

It’s basicly a mechanical lock against accidentally using it incorrectly.

Inspect the Depth Gauge

The other option could be your depth gauge. This handy piece of equipment will help in accuracy but will hinder function if adjusted improperly.

When the depth stop lever locks onto the spindle too hard it will inhibits movement of hammer mechanism. It’s supposed to shut down percussive motion when it encounters any kind of resistance so as not to damage tool. Unless you’re actualy looking to measure something at a particular depth, loosen the depth gauge slider and allow it to move freely.

Examine the Drill Bit

But also look at bit. The GX3 will stall if it has a dull or otherwise damaged SDS-plus bit.

The bit must moves a little back and forth for hammer mechanism to work. When bound with debris or even seized in the hole, the overload is sensed by the GX3 and it shut down so you don’t fire the hammer when there is no bit to bite into. That’s a nice safety measure.

Get that bit out, clean the hole and check flanges. Torn flanges can make bit want to slip or bind which sends false messages to motor controller. What appears to be an electrical problem is often cured by a new bit.

Allow for Cooling Time

Thermal can be part of it. The GX3 has temperature monitoring built into it. So if you’re busting some heavy duty holes for a long time, it will stop fire and throttle back until it cools off.

That’s not because it malfunctioned, that’s by design. Let it sit a few minutes and let it cool off. You’ll hurt your motor forcing it to fire when it’s hot.

This saves the life of an expensive investment so patience pay off.

Reboot the Tool Electronics

Last but not least, turn the tool back on. Simply remove the battery pack, wait 10 seconds and insert the pack again.

This will erase any brief logic errors on control board. Like rebooting your computer, this is the digital version of a reboot. It is an easy fix that is easy to forget, and it is often what you need.

If all else fails, then maybe there is an internal problem. More likely though, the GX3 want something from you: a battery change or a setting adjustment. More often than not, however, the tool isn’t the bad guy.

It’s merely reminding you to make sure you’re set up rightly.
