Vintage tools can make us feel frustrated. We admire sturdy cast iron construction and love how rock-solid this old drill press feels when we pick it up. Then, we attempt to change out a chuck to hold a bigger bit and discover the jaws won’t budge.
The tapered shank are stuck fast. Your once antique becomes a paperweight instead of a tool. Why do this?
This is most often because original chuck has worn out, or occasionally to switch from a keyed to a keyless or keyed to keyed chuck. It isn’t meant to be removed easily, because that is not what a taper interface are for. Taper designs is meant to create retention and friction.

Knowing your enemy, so to speak, will save you a lot of hassle before reaching for hammer. So what are we up against? Geometry.
The chuck rest atop a tapered spindle which exert a huge amount of clamping force because of simple physics. The smaller the diameter of hole inside, the better it’s going to hold in terms of being centered. And there lies the problem with getting one off.
Removing the Stuck Chuck Safely
Always start by loosening all the way the chuck jaws. This decreases the inner bore diameter just a bit. It take some of the internal pressure off.
If you have a keyed chuck, it keep the jaws from catching on the spindle threads. The next option is removal bar or drift pin method. This one require that your chuck has a hole on the side of its housing.
This is where most of the older chucks does. Slide a steel rod through the hole. Then grab the other end of the rod with a block of wood or a soft mallet.
Strike the end of the rod. Don’t use a steel hammer. Don’t dent the chuck body; you want to knock the taper loose.

Alternative Removal Techniques
Apply force to the taper on the base of it, not the jaws. Some people uses a large C-clamp across the chuck body. Then they’ll set a block of wood up against spindle and crank down on that thing till the chuck comes right off.
If you have a solid bench that’s fine. It spreads out the force evenly. It also won’t risk any chips in the aluminum housing.
Lubrication and Patience Tips
The taper may be realy frozen sometimes. Old grease or rust will act like glue in those tight spots. A penetrating oil will help.
If possible, let it stand overnight. It works on that chemistry action and gets down into those tiny gap. Then when you go back to work with it, the vibration of the drift pin will do so much betterer.
Brute force doesn’t always work, patience does every time. You run the risk of bending the spindle if you force it. If that happens, your spindle won’t be straight anymore, and neither will the whole machine.
Cleaning and Installing the New Chuck
Now that the chuck is loose check your chuck taper and also the spindle. Clean them real good. With a rag and some solvent, wipe off all the old grease or gunk.
You don’t want a dirty mating surface where the new chuck will go. Otherwise, it won’t spin true. How it doesn’t have any run out.
And the more precise drilling needs a clean taper. Sometimes the spindle can get pitted or scratched and should of been polished slightly with some fine sand paper wrapped in a block. Installing the new chuck is the reverse of removal, but easier.
Lightly apply some oil or grease to the taper. Slide it off. Don’t force it.
A slight push and it will seat itself. Gently tap it with the wood block if necessary to be sure it’s completely seated. Preparation is often the difference in having a free chuck or a stuck chuck.
Use the proper tool, respect the taper and your drill press will operate smoothy and drill cleanly.
