An oscillating sander can be frustrating. No matter what angle or sandpaper, this thing just doesn’t behave. It digs in, or vibrates off a table.
Don’t throw away your machine! It’s not broken, it’s just misunderstood. Yes, they have quirks, but oscillating tools are versatile machines.
Here’s how the quick back-and-forth motion can help (and hinder). Once you know the problem, you can fix it. You find yourself digging into the corners on the work piece.
Common Problems With Ridgid Oscillating Sanders
Triangular Pad Digging and Chiseling
The triangular pad have sharp points and bites into wood. That’s what happened when you pushed to hard. The corner become chisels not sanders.
Slow down and let the weight of tool take over. No more pushing. Resistance is a signal you’re applying too much force.
Back off. Let oscillation grind surface. This will prevent the sander from digging into corners of your workpiece.
Reducing Vibration with Speed Control
Another issue is too much vibration. These tools are powerful and designed for job site. They gets a little aggressive on delicate work.
Inspect orbital speed controls. Most models will let you dial down how many times it oscillates in a minute. The lower the setting, the less it bite.
And slower speed makes it easier to control. Slow speed cuts with less heat. Too much heat will ruin finishes fast.
Dialing that back should of help eliminate scorching the wood.
Maintaining the Hook-and-Loop Pad
The paper slides because hook-and-loop system loses its grip. This is a common issue that has happened to me.
The hook and loop pad on bottom of plate gets full of dust or just wears down over time. Then you got a piece of paper sliding around on an adhesive that have lost its stick. You get uneven marks on your project.
Keep base plate clean with stiff brush. Clean the base plate regularly with stiff brush. If the hook pad feel smooth, the adapter plate need to be replaced.
It is not expensive. Just takes cares of big headache.
Improving Dust Collection Performance
You can’t collect all of the dust.
An oscillating sander has a tiny vacuum port. It’s not great at collecting fine dust. Check your hose for any kinks.
Are you covered in powder? Might be time to try a dust shroud. Made off plastic, these shields guide air into your vacuum.
Capture rate improve dramatically. This reduces your cleanup time.
Preventing Overheating and Glazing
The motor will be damaged if overheated.
Friction is what cause a tool to heat up. When you feel the housing getting warm, shut it off. Allow it to cool.
Using this tool too long will stress its bearings. Do intermittent work instead. Sand for a half minute.
Then rest. This prolongs life of your tool. It also prevents glazing of sanding pad.
A glazed pad do not cut. It burns the wood.
Using Heavy Duty Power Cords
It provides a steady source of power.
Don’t use a flimsy, thin extension cord, that will cause your motor to stall when you put it under load. That makes the tool stop or lurch. Get heavy duty cord suitable for amount of power your tool needs.
Having a solid power connection allow the tool to operate consistantly. Make it feel like a partnership, you and the machine. Understand what the motion can do for you, but also understand its limits.
Control the tool. The motor have only so much muscle. The tool is an extension of your will.
Apply light pressure. Clean the pad. Use consistent power.
