It’s frustrating when your DeWalt extension bit freezes to your drill chuck or to your workpiece. The clock ticks closer to deadline. The time-saving tool is costing you more time than instead.
You’re in middle of a project. A seemingly minor issue halt everything. It is typically not.
Typically it’s something that has been engaged improper, it’s heated up too much, or there was some torque on it and it bound. Usually people panic then try harder and they just get their jaws tighten down or end up bending out the shank. You have to know what made it grab initially.
How to Free Stuck DeWalt Extension Bits
Understanding Why Bits Bind Up
Nearly all of it stem from one thing: friction meets resistance. By their nature, extension bits is meant for long reaches into deep hole. However, they lose some stiffness along the way.
If you’re driving into something very hard, your bit will either be able to grab hold on wall of the hole and bind up, or twist around in chuck as you hit resistance. That cause heat which leads to metal sticking to metal. How do you break that weld without shearing off the bit?
Initial Assessment and Stability
To begin with, identify where the bind is coming from. Is the bit lodged in wood or in the drill? If it’s in the drill, take that away from the work piece.
You don’t want a loose work piece moving around on you and using up all your energy trying to break the bit. This require space to push back. If the bit is caught in the work piece, then you’ve got to have something to hold the piece solid so all your force go toward removing the bit.
Using Gravity and Gentle Pressure
The first tool are stability. Gravity is your friend when the bit is a little stuck. Point the bit down and hang drill upside down by its body.
Start the drill turning backwards slowly and apply gentle, constant pressure to the chuck sleeve. Once the jaws relax, the weight of the bit will help pull it free. Don’t go blasting it around at top speed.
You’ll either snap the bit off inside or strip the chuck threads. Patience win out over power every time. Gravity fails.
Applying Mechanical Leverage
Introduce mechanical leverage. Hold the drill body secure with one hand and use locking pliers (vice grips) on the exposed end of the bit. Twirl the pliers the opposite way from the bit’s rotation.
It provide a direct torque counter that override the chuck’s grip. Be gentle with the pliers. Avoid crushing thin walls of extension sleeve.

Removing Bits Embedded in Workpiece
That’s all fine and good unless the bit is embeded into the work piece. In that case you can’t pull it free from the front end. You have to turn it around and back it out from side.
Stick a punch or screw driver down through the spiraling flutes of the bit. Tap on it lightly with a hammer until it begin to wedge into the bit. Then twist the bit counter clockwise using your tool as a lever.
This will help break the friction keeping it locked in. Sometimes, you have time. If lubrication is an option, this can be great.
Using Penetrating Oil for Lubrication
Pour a couple drops of penetrating oil (like 3-in-One oil or WD-40) on the shaft and let it penetrate down the shaft around where the bit meets the other object. Give it about 15 minutes. Because the oil reduces surface tension, it will help loosen the bit up as it loosens the grip that the bit have on the object.
It’s most effectivly for bits embedded in plastic or metal, not so much with wood, but give it a shot anyway.
Prevention and Proper Technique
A little prevention go a long way. Make sure you start with all your bits firmly seated in DeWalt chuck.
A loose bit heats up, wobbles and grabs faster. Select an appropriate speed for the wood being cut. Running too fast on dense hardwoods create heat which expand the metal and makes it bind up.
Be mindful of how you work and keep things cool. The next time you get a jammed extension bit, don’t try to force it loose by wrenching on it. Breathe.
Is this a workpiece problem or a chuck problem? If it’s a chuck problem, use the proper counter-force step by step. If it isn’t, don’t force anything.
