Fixing Sticky Power Buttons
These units has a thumb friendly power button. Because it is higher than the other buttons, you might accidentally touch it when reaching for volume or station change controls. Check your power button to make sure it isn’t loose.
Debris gets lodged under it which may cause it to stick or register a false press. Dirt and debris under the button cause intermittent power loss more often than not. Use compressed air or a soft brush to clean around this button.
Make certain it is placed firmly in its place. A sticky button can fool you into thinking you have a far more serius electrical issue.
Improving Signal Reception
Typically issues with connectivity are more related to location then equipment malfunction. Radio waves gets blocked by rebar and concrete. Ridgid’s radio receives both FM and AM signals. But if you’re getting a lot of static, move your antenna.
A lot of folks do not extend the telescopic antenna because it blocks access. Wrong! Fully extend it and point it towards your signal source.
Another possibility is moving the radio around just a bit. Sometimes a couple of feet will break through a signal that are being blocked by a massive piece of metal.
Maintaining Battery Health
Poor storage habits cause many battery life complaints. Older radios has rechargeable nickel-metal hydride cells; new ones have lithium packs. Either can suffer from prolonged exposure to zero charge. Deeply discharging a battery by keeping it idle too long can explain why yours goes dead in twenty minutes.
Top off the pack first, then use it. Don’t let it go all the way flat each day. Partial discharges are easier on the chemistry.
With proper care, you should of get an entire day’s worth of hard use out of a good battery before it requires refilling.
Cleaning Speaker Grills
Dirty speaker grills cause audio distortions Over time, fine particles of dust accumulate in the grille’s mesh. Eventually, this mutes sound by limiting airflow.
The highs becomes harsh while the bass become weak. To clear the grill, use your vacuum cleaner with the brush attachment. Work gently; you don’t want to damage the mesh.
For a removable grill, remove it and wash it under running water. Allow it to fully dry before reinstalling. Removing any blockages will allow soundwaves through again, restoring the expected clarity.
Repairing Volume Knobs
A dirty potentiometer skips or jumps when you try to change the volume. The physical device that changes resistance based on turning the knob is called a potentiometer. Dirt and grease get between electrical contact points.
Spray a little contact cleaner into the slot where the volume knob goes. Then turn the knob back and forth a few times to work it in there. The cleaner will dislodge the debris and oxidation that’s creating your problem.
This is an inexpensive solution to restore smooth functioning to an irritating control.
Checking Power Adapters
Is it the power adapter? That’s another possibility. Check your cord if it came with one. Is there any kinking or fraying of the cord? Sometimes a dodgy cord will intermittently provide power to the radio.
It could act as though the battery has gone bad, on…off…on….off…. That’s not a dead battery, that’s a bad connection. Try swapping out adapters if available.
Make sure they’re rated for the same voltage as the radio. Over time, a bad charger will fry the insides of a radio. A new cord eliminates future damage to the radio.
Drying Out Wet Radios
Although they claim to be rugged, water will get inside if left in a soaking rain. They aren’t waterproof; they’re water resistant. Moisture can work its way into the seams.
Get the outside good and dry. Put it back in the bag with some uncooked rice to pull any remaining moisture from the inside. Don’t turn it on until it’s completely dry.
Most small problems involving moisture will go away with time and correct drying methods. Most times, you can fix a bad radio without a technician. You just need a little know-how on how the environment impacts your tool and some light cleaning.
A broken radio is deafening, but the solution is often simple. Spend a minute or two cleaning the grille and buttons. Verify your antenna position and power sources.
You will likely find the music playing again, along with flow of your daily work.
