The starter cord pulls; no go. Again… harder this time. The recoil grabs your hand as you crank harder (but still), no engine sound.
Frustration sets in, and suddenly mowing lawn has become a mechanical puzzle. Before you even cut that first piece of grass, most owners assume their battery are dead, the engine is seized up, or a fuse has blew. They begin poking around, opening panels and removing spark plugs.

Blade Brake Clutch Safety Lever
The most frequent problem on gas models are with the blade brake clutch. That’s the part that shuts off the blade when you let go of the handle bar. If the safety lever isn’t fully engaged, engine will crank but not fire.
Is there a safety lever on the handle? Make sure it’s squeezed all the way down on the handle. Sometimes cable gets misaligned or is just loose.
Adjusting the tension should reconnects the safety. Basically, make sure the safety lever are fully engaged so the engine can run. Not all electric mowers is alike.
Electronic Handle Grip Switch
The Ryobis has an electronic handle-grip switch that must be pressed to tell motor to start spinning. That’s where things can goes wrong, with a dirty or failed switch. The solution is to locate a button or a physical toggle next to the throttle.
Sometimes just clearing out debris will do it; other times you need to wipe it clean then press the switch hard. It’s not a software fix. It’s a hardware contact issue.
Battery Mower Overload Protection
Battery mowers also has overload protection. If you hit thick wet grass, it may trip an internal thermal breaker to prevent burning out the windings. It’s there to prevent burning up the winding.
There is no button you can push through, and you won’t get going again until it cools back down (a period of 15 or even 20 minutes). When you try to force-start it, it reset the timer but damages the motor. The only solution are patience.
Spark Arrestor Screen Maintenance
Starting problems can stem from spark arrestor screens, too. When dirty, they limits air flow and cause engines to choke. Cleaning isn’t a reset button, but more like a system refresh.
Pull the spark arrestor screen out of the exhaust pipe and knock the carbon build up off. Having a clean exhaust path mean good combustion. Many people forget this maintenance item until their mower won’t start.
Kill Switch Wire Connection
Look at the kill switch wire close to engine block. The kill switch wire must be attached and tight. Otherwise no signal reach the engine for ignition.
Simply make sure the connection looks good and is tight. It simply resets the electrical circuit needed for ignition. Remember most of these problems aren’t electronic; they’re mechanical.
The trick is resetting your Ryobi mower. Check the connections. It is not a secret button.
